Recommendations for Making the Most of Moving Day
The time has come to say good-bye to your old home and hello to a new one! We’ve all been there- it’s exciting, but stressful. But, thankfully there people out there who know how to have a seamless move and we’re taking their ideas! Try these pro-tips when it’s time to pack it up and move:
- Organization- This goes without saying, but a well structured list that corresponds with numbered boxes, labelled for their designated rooms in your new home works wonders when moving and unpacking. You can have your movers (or very good friends) bring the boxes straight to their final destination. Check out these templates for packing ease!
- Donating- The less you have, the easier moving day will be. Try donating items that you haven’t used in a while. Ask yourself, “Have I used this in the past 6 months?” If you didn’t miss it, you probably can let it go. Most communities have charities that pick up for free, making it even easier!
- Being Prepared- Stuffing everything into a box on moving day is not really the best tactic. Usually, there is advance notice of leaving for a new home. Take advantage and get all your things packed early. Leave out your essentials- usually clothes for 2 weeks, toiletries, you can even use disposable dinnerware the last couple of days. It makes a world of difference and keeps your mind at ease as the day draws near.
- Hiring a Moving Company- Moving companies are not as expensive as you might think. There are a lot of companies out there that provide good labor, while you only have to supply the truck. But, if you have expensive antiques and very expensive equipment, it’s best to stay with a traditionally insured and bonded company to cover their liabilities.
- Plan Ahead- You may be leaving your apartment for a house, or another apartment. In that case, it’s always best to have an overlap in tenancy. Moving days never go as expected, so having a few extra days cushion (if you can) is always recommended. Either start your new lease a few days early, or try to plan a way to give yourself some time to be flexible with mover cancellations, the weather, or emergencies.
- If you end up following these simple strategies, you might just find moving day to be more on the exciting side than stressful. It’s always a bittersweet experience, moving. Saying goodbye tools memories, while looking forward to new ones. Don’t let the process get in the way of that!
